What's been going on? Oh, nothing much. A tornado missed touching down in my hood on the way to downtown by an uncomfortable margin last week - it ended up not touching down, at all, fortunately for us. Unlike poor St. Louis and elsewhere. I did get from the attic to the basement with essentials, my emergency lamp/charger and 2 elderly confused kitties in 3 minutes, so good to set a preliminary bar to improve upon.

I went to the Independent Book Publisher's Association Pub U Conference on Friday in St. Paul. On the plus side, I met some lovely people and had a nice lunch. I also scored contacts at two book distributors to have chats about how to try and "level up" sales at Queen of Swords Press so I think that part was worthwhile. The one workshop panel I made it to was...an experience. Apparently, they don't really vet their presenters. Or maybe they do and thought this was fine?
I went to a panel on fundraising and grant writing for publishers at which: one panelist conducted a sort of revival meeting about writing mission statements and believing in yourself (but nothing about finding sources of funding, applying, etc.); there was a mildly terrifying New Age skinny white lady who had no noticeable publishing experience, but was apparently trying start a cult, and urged us all to ask our personal communities for $5000-$25,000 to “be a part of the process” (head slap! Why didn’t I think of that?); and then there was the moderator who urged us to go through our mail to look for possible local funding sources to approach  (I’m sure the fly-by-night realty companies trying to get their hands on my house would tots be interested in our books! Or maybe the gas company!). Then there was the AI panel, about which the less said, the better and which also could have done with several fewer people who were all unquestioningly “shiny toy!” and utterly clueless about the fact that if they get the brave new techbro future they are so excited about, no one will need them (hint: avoid NYU's publishing program. Just saying).  Would I go again? Not unless someone else was paying for it.

Saturday was Rochester MN Pride, which was mostly delightful except for being cold and windy. My friend Matt was great and we found a fun new restaurant.
Sunday, I went to breakfast with Caroline Stevermer, who is a marvelous dining companion, and to a matinee of "Things Like This" with another friend. This is a new indie gay romcom in which one of the protagonists is fat, but that is not the central conflict of the story and no one insists that he get skinny to get the guy! It was charmingly uneven and enjoyable.

This week is a mad scramble of stressors - my work contract is up in a couple of weeks, my mortgage just took a healthy leap upward, etc. So I am dealing with it like an adult and fleeing town for part of the weekend. My cat sitter is camping out here by way of a mini vacation for her and I am off to Red Wing, MN to hang out at a delightful Victorian hotel with a whirlpool bath (my sore hip is craving this!), go to tea at the local tea shop, look at antiques, write a bit and such. Oh, and log in to WisCon online for our 4PM Saturday panel on small press publishing. Is this wise? Nope! Very much looking forward to it.
Have a grand holiday weekend, however you're spending it!

Still can't announce about the award, alas. Writers, keep your contact info up to date and check it occasionally! Do it for the team, if nothing else.

I'm making progress on Jana's memorial and will post about it when we settle on a date. it will take place at the Open Book in Minneapolis, where the Minnesota Center for Book Arts is located.

Apart from that, I am still employed, despite recent reorgs. I do get to shift to an even worse manager for a while though, which I could very much do without. I have also come to the conclusion that the 20+ year old washer and dryer are not long for this world so this Friday, I get an estimate on whether or not the aging hookups can be converted for a heat pump dryer and a new washer. Fingers crossed on that. My experiments with induction cooking on the hot plate are going well and I am continuing to very slowly clear things out of the house. I am also looking at taking up container gardening because I know I'm not up for the full scale garden beds, weeding, et al. I am looking at my 62nd birthday in a couple of weeks and I want to be as realistic as possible about where I and things are at.

I have also been reaching out to Congress, sending money when I can and so forth. I also signed up for Elders Climate Action, which is a national group that does awareness, conservation, education, lobbying and protests, which I figured was a nice broad range that I could plug myself into. Other things under consideration: rejoining the Unitarian Universalist Society and rejoining the Society for Creative Anachronism.  This is by way of checking out communities where friends are involved and are recommending them to me. Given how things are, more community is much better than less. Also, more art. Been trying to make it to a concert or a play with friends every week, which has been delightful.

In other news, Point of Hearts (Astreiant #6) by Melissa Scott comes out from Queen of Swords Press on Thursday 3/20! And Books 1-5 are on sale on our website through tomorrow 3/19.

catherineldf: (Default)
The year is off to a quite a start. In order as I noted them, not in order of importance:

1. New story progressing nicely, as is getting ducks in a row for next Queen of Swords Press title. Next up, scheduling events and such.
2. Speaking of which, new Queen of Swords Press title, Point of Hearts (Astreiant #6) by Melissa Scott is up for preorder! This is the brand new Astreiant novel that we'll be releasing on 3/20!
3. Tune in tomorrow (1/18) around noon for Madame Askew Sips the Tea, featuring me! It will be featured on Madame's YouTube channel in a few days. Always a delight!

4. Starting in on the gigantic pile of grant reviews (26!) I have due next month. Yes, this is a (small) paying gig).
5. My beloved big boy kitty, Shu, got sick around Christmas and has been diagnosed with kitty diabetes. 2 shots a day and we are trying to get him stable. He's still pretty listless and has pronounced neuropathy. But everything else is pretty normal for him and he doesn't seem to be in pain so fingers crossed that he makes a full recovery.
6. Jana is fading. She's had a couple of ministrokes and is now being described as "nonresponsive" with some regularity. Yes, there is a DNR. I'm going to check on her this weekend; the nursing assessment is that it's weeks, not months, before she passes.

7. I'm getting window treatments from Costco. But why, you ask? Because all of the 19 ancient vinyl blinds in the house are broken. Jana attempted to repair them and toward the end, would do things like nail them into the window frame. Many of them have to be custom cut because 100+ year old house with many, many windows. I have tried to deal with it on my own and I just cannot. So Costco has a deal with a company in Wisconsin that comes in and does an assessment and gives you an estimate (more reasonable than you'd think) and that is now complete, so next month I get fake wood blinds that the cats can't break. And an insulating curtain for the always freezing walk-in bedroom closet, which is also the entrance to my attic office. Am excited. At this point, this is about my mental health as much as anything else.
8. A friend is taking me to the symphony tomorrow night to listen to a concert about Nordic folklore and another friend is hosting me for a Russian-style tea at her house on Sunday afternoon.
9. More house projects on tap soon. I'm trying to do everything I can while I'm still working and before prices go nuts.
10. Day job continues to be crappy. Have asked my company to look for another gig because the toxicity is starting to dent me.

11. A reminder to fandom in general that a whole lot of people knew NG to one extent or another. I had dinner with him once and shared a whole bunch of friend and colleague circle overlap with him. I knew he had treated some of his partners poorly and done some crappy things. The horrors in that article were a whole new level, however, and I had no idea it was that BAD. Don’t make assumptions about who knew what when or conversely, hold forth about how you just know he’s innocent because he said so in a blog post. I have friends close to the situation and nothing I’ve seen or heard so far suggests that we’re done with it. This stance will absolutely not age well.
12. And the shit hits the fan on Monday. I'm still stocking up and planning and getting things I will need now. Will it be enough? Almost certainly not. But I will do the best I can and help good folks when and where I can. That said, all those who voted for this shitshow because they wanted to watch others suffer? Gonna eat popcorn and not lift a finger for them.

More coherent posts soon. Maybe, Had 2 migraines this week and had to work anyway so am not at my best.

Our 2024 in publishing was pretty lit, all things considered:

  • We were finalists for the Independent Book Publishers Association's Innovative Voices Program, which was pretty cool.
  • 3 of our authors were Guest of Honor at Conventions - Melissa Scott at Cleveland Concoction, Michael Merriam at MarsCon Minneapolis and me, Catherine Lundoff, at Capricon 44.
  • Death by Silver (Lynes & Mathey #1) by Melissa Scott and Amy Griswold was a finalist for the Midwest Book Awards
  • We put out 6 books (not the 7 I was aiming for, but close!):
  •  Terror at Tierra de Cobre by Michael Merriam
  • Point of Hopes (Astreiant #1) by Melissa Scott and Lisa A. Barnett
  • Point of Knives (Astreiant #2) by Melissa Scott
  • Point of Dreams (Astreiant #3) by Melissa Scott and Lisa A. Barnett
  • Fairs' Points (Astreiant #4) by Melissa Scott
  • Point of Sighs (Astreiant #5) by Melissa Scott
  1. In addition to their other publishing successes, our authors were on programming at Balticon, Glasgow Worldcon, World Fantasy in Saratoga. Minicon, 4th Street Fantasy, Flights of Foundry, Mythcon and Can*Con.
  2. We also had tables at the Saratoga Book Festival, Queer Writes, GCLS, Twin Cities Book Festival, 13 Gears Steampunk, Carver County Pride, Twin Cities Pride, Rochester Pride, St. Cloud Pride, Columbia Heights Pride and Twin Cities Pagan Pride, along with other venues.
  3. Our authors were featured at the WROTE Podcast, the Writers Drinking Coffee Podcast, the Story Hour, a PEN online panel on publishing, Madam Askew Sips the Tea, the Temporal Textural Talks Book Club, DreamHaven Books, plus several library and bookstore readings and talks.
  4. Jennie Goloboy taught a LOT of workshops, including one with me at the Loft Literary Center.
  5. We helped raise funds for Romancing the Vote, West St. Paul Pride, Telling Queer History, Rainbow Railroad, the Lost-n-Food Youth Shelter in Atlanta, among other events/orgs.

It's been a heckuva a year! It should be noted that all of this was managed through several cases of COVID, a major move, job changes, health crises, moving my spouse into memory care, then hospice, the death of family, friends and pets, and doubtlessly more horrors than I can recall. Through it all, our authors and cover artists were champs and did a great job. My assistant, Alexa, and the various friends who helped out at events were incredible helpful. And, as always, big shoutout to everyone who hosted us bought books, reviewed our books, pledged our Patreon, requested books at the library, etc. 2024 was our best year of sales to date and we thank you all!

So we (Queen of Swords Press) put out a fab new edition of Point of Sighs (Astreiant #5) by Melissa Scott last week and Melissa just remembered that she create a tea blend for it and for Point of Hearts, the brand new Astreiant novel that we're releasing first quarter of 2025! I'm looking forward to trying them both!
Point of Sighs Tea Blend
Point of Hearts Tea Blend

My beloved Bingley's Teas is on indefinite hiatus due to issues beyond anyone's control so I might see if I can use Adagio's blending option to create a new tea for us next year.

The next volume in the Astreiant Series, Fairs’ Point (Astreiant #4) by Melissa Scott, is here
And Melissa Scott talks about how she and Lisa A. Barnett were inspired to come up with the idea of dog racing as a sport in Astreiant here.

Speaking of the Astreiant Series, we have a great deal running on Google Play this weekend . Bundle any 2 of the first 3 books and get 25% off!

11/29 (today) is also the last day to get 60% off the audiobook for Catherine Lundoff’s Silver Moon! Don’t sleep on this one!

 Namely, this last week.

This will be rough - please skip if you’re not in a place for rough end of life/dementia stuff.

It kicked off with my discovery that Jana had been refusing to get out of bed and wouldn’t eat or drink for a couple of days. And it was not the first time, though the previous time had been about a day in length. Her regular PCA (the one I pay to check on her) was of the opinion that it was time to
look at hospice care and we brought in the social worker I pay to guide me through the maelstrom for a confirmation. She met with the staff and then she and I had a very upsetting (to me) conversation about time, money and energy, none of which I possess in great abundance after the last few years and how I “could keep her going” if I just did more. So she is currently nonverbal (except for the word “coffee”) or makes random noises, has no interest in books, most music, conversation, art on screen, art in books and minimal interest in TV, which she can’t process, far as I can tell. Even her PCA is having trouble getting her to engage at all in the crafts that she still loved months ago. Visits are an absolute torment for me at this point, which is why I keep her PCA on (also so there’s additional advocacy for her). I can’t take her out, originally due to her being “a flight risk” and now because I’m worried that she’ll fall. Gosh, yes, let’s “keep her going” because you see her every 6-8 months and just “know” that she’s still in there. At any rate, I was very clear about what I could do and could not do  and explained emotional, physical and financial burnout in fairly brutal terms. I talked to her CADI social worker the next day and got a much more affirming response about where she’s at (closer to hospice than my advisor thinks). But the long and short of it is that she apparently has to stop eating long enough for it to be recognized as a problem and then I can get her assessed for hospice. I am not thrilled, but there’s nothing more I can do at the moment because she’s in the midst of a “rally” right now and therefore “fine.” Dementia sucks pointy rocks.

Anyway, so that’s where that’s at for the moment. On a brighter, cheerier note, Queen of Swords Press, my little queer science fiction, fantasy and horror press, is a finalist for the Independent Book Publishers Association’s Innovative Voices publishing program! It comes with mentorship, discounts and access to a bunch of things we are still too small to afford at this stage. In short, it could really help us level up. That said, they announce the 5 winners next week and the company we’re in is pretty stellar so please keep your fingers crossed for us!

I was hoping to have the next volume, Point of Dreams, in the Astreiant Series created by Melissa Scott and Lisa A. Barnett out this month, but we had way too many shenanigans so pushing that out until 10/10. Preorders will go up this weekend around Columbia Heights Pride, where we will be tomorrow, and St. Cloud Pride, where my wonderful assistant Alexa will be peddling our books while I deal with other things. Onward and upward, as they say.

catherineldf: (Default)
Bit of a whirlwind last couple of weeks. I went to GCLS in St. Paul last weekend. I had originally intended to stay all weekend, but that was before I decided to go to  Glasgow Worldcon. So I cut it down to 2 days, just vending, nothing else, masked the whole time, apart from eating at my table in the hallway by myself. It was kind of dull and not much fun, but I dodged the wave of COVID that went through the con and did have some nice chats with fans of the werewolf books and caught up a bit with some friends. What I did not dodge was an unpleasant stomach bug that hit this week and took me out for a few days. And the endless rain that we've been having came with bonus thunderstorms on the weekend, so no sooner did I get through the stomach issues and the resulting no sleep, it was Migraine City. Good times!

And that was just my personal stuff. I did fit in a quick trip to the Trylon Microcinema for a viewing of "Blithe Spirit" (1945) on Saturday night, between crises, which was fun. Ended up going by my self because my friend had a family emergency and I wasn't sure that I wasn't going to be too sick to go, but had a nice time and ran into a friend outside who was there for the late show. Sunday, was a cats on the couch, forget moving day. Which is not great considering that I'm leaving the country soon and have a friend coming to stay with the kitties, which means cleaning and excavation and such. I did manage a burst of energy today, which resulted in day jobbery, a small business grant application completed under the wire and a COVID booster. Go, me!

How do I feel about this week's bigger than Me news? Well, I think that President Biden did the right thing. And I am pretty excited to support VP Harris, neither one of which should surprise anyone too much.

Meanwhile, scrambling to get stuff done, including getting Melissa Scott's Point of Knives (Astreiant #2) up for preorder, just sent someone an acceptance letter  (announcement if they accept, once the contract is dry!) and am running two book sales through the end of the month.
  • Pick up our entire backlist at Smashwords now through 7/31.
  • Pick up most of our books, including Point of Hopes and Terror at Tierra de Cobre on sale at DriveThruFiction through 7/31.
Now to do some odds and ends and get to bed early since there's a release at work this week on top of everything else.

So I survived Queen of Swords Press's first venture into Twin Cities Pride last weekend. For some idea of the scale of that, estimated attendance was 600,000 over the course of two days, which makes it the biggest outdoor event in Minnesota with the exception of the State Fair...which runs for two weeks. From a vendor perspective, we put in a minimum of 2 10 hour days, plus setup on Friday, including time spent hauling stuff back and forth from parking (by utility cart, in my case). It was a LOT and I could not have done it without help. Big shoutout to Michael Merriam, Alexa Garber, Matt Coe, Jody Wurl and Lauri Holm, who spelled me at the table, peddled books, helped me haul things and so forth. The weather was perfect, the people were  lovely and apart from some snafus with the vendor setup, I had a fine time and good sales.

Big shoutout to everyone who participated in the Pride StoryBundle this year! We raised around $450 for Rainbow Railroad and it all went reasonably well, given that we are all scattered like whoa this summer.
Apart from that, I currently have 2 signed books, Silver Moon and Blood Moon, in the Romancing the Vote Auction, which ends tomorrow. The book package will include goodies from the International Wolf Center in Ely, MN so I think you should check it, as well as the other auction items, if you can. Lots of great stuff out there and I believe it's broken all their previous records in raising funds for organizations fighting voter suppression. Queen of Swords Press is also having a big backlist sale on Smashwords for the Summer/Winter Sale and there are many deals to be had.

Today, I'm sitting around with cats and moving very slowly through my to-do list. Not sleeping well due to comforting the cats--I truly hate local fireworks. Sigh. Now off to go cook dinner and then watch things, possibly while not working.

It's late May and I already feel like this has been a year already. Last week's "fun" involved a Denial of Service attack on the Queen of Swords Press website. It took about 4 hours for me to get in and get it stopped because the flood of spam from a server in Moldova kept crashing things, but I did eventually get things locked down. Eventually, I'll fix the Contact Form so it works again, but I thought I'd give it a week or so for things to settle down. The rest of the week was less dramatic, but I'm already behind and scrambling to get caught up, so it didn't help. :-(

This weekend was mostly good. I miss the hell out of being at WisCon and it feels very weird to be in town. I had a lot of ouch (the weather has been exciting), but also a fun couple of short plays with Jody Wurl at the Crane Theater, a delightful trip to the Minnesota Streetcar Museum with Michael Merriam as part of my "do things I've never done locally plan," a lovely breakfast with Caroline Stevermer and a very nice hot beverage with Jennie Goloboy at a new-to-me coffee place. I also visited Jana and she basically told me to leave, so that was fun. She's getting on better with her PCA these days than me so I keep getting her checked on every week. Less frustrating for me and likely more useful for her.

Apart from that, it's all errands and terrifying meetings about Twin Cities Pride. I somehow missed the memo that it's now over 500k attendees and it will be our first year as a vendor. There's so much stuff to deal with! I'm a freaked. But that said, come see us in the Queer Writes tent in Loring Park next to the bridge to the Sculpture Garden! I will have books and such!

June also features a whole lot of other stuff (see pinned post above) so there will be other opportunities to see me and my authors. In other news, Kate Larking, who some of you know from Sirens Con days, has spun up her own marketing and publicity biz. I'm looking to bring her on to help me tackle some things I have dropped the ball on, like juicing up our backlist and getting things linked together more sensibly for cross promotion. Let me know if you need a contact for her - she also helps organize Kickstarters, coaches in person bookselling and sundry other related tasks. In addition to that, I'm applying for the Independent Book Publisher's Association Innovative Voices Program. It's a "leveling up" mentorship and grant program for indie publishers and I'm very pleased that Betsy Miller of Thinking Ink Press, one of last year's recipients, has agreed to recommend us. Now to come up with something more coherent than, "OMG! We're publishing the entire Astreiant Series by Melissa Scott and Lisa A. Barnett, plus a new novella this year!" to say about us.

Oh, and hey, the Pride StoryBundle launches on 5/31! Stay tuned!

As always, more soon.

Queen of Swords Press News first!
Big shoutout to Melissa Scott and Amy Griswold! Death by Silver  is a
2024 Midwest Book Award Finalist!

And, speaking of Melissa Scott, Point of Hopes: A Novel of Astreiant (Book 1) is up for preorder on the Queen of Swords Press webstore and elsewhere! Look for Book 2, Point of Knives, in July and the other books every month after that, on through to a brand new novella in the series in December!

We have been scrambling to get Hopes done for months now. Between Melissa, cover artist Matt Bright and me, we have weathered: 2 cases of COVID, a major move, 3 job changes, multiple events and a major car accident. But we have perservered and it is gorgeous! Preorders will be trickling out into the world in the next few weeks. We also have review copies!

Otherwise, just a tad buried under tasks and work and such. If you're in or near Rochester, MN, stop by Rochester Pride this weekend and say hi to us (Queen of Swords Press will have a table). I've even got a couple of new writing projects, in addition to the next werewolf novel.
More news to come!

catherineldf: (Default)
Just realized that I had not posted since recovering from the Rona. I had bad cold symptoms and was sleepy for several days, then lingering tired the next week. All recovered now! Which is good because the universe is throwing more at me. The latest crisis is that my day job contract is getting cut short next month, instead of June, due to a giant project getting canceled. My contracting con is starting a search and we’ll see how that goes. I could do with a month to just work on Queen of Swords Press projects and drafting the next werewolf novel. A couple of months would be more problematic, particularly since I’ve decided to go to Glasgow Worldcon in August! I’m going to meet Heather Rose Jones in Reykjavik and hang out there for a couple of days, then travel with her to Glasgow. I didn’t get a big trip for my 60th and life has been, let’s face it, hard, so this is my gift to myself. Have already lined up a friend for house and cat sitting too. :-)

What else is going on?
  • Jana is more or less adjusting to memory care. She doesn’t seem to hate it and is taking up new crafts.
  • I’m down to one last financial thing that the county needs to pick up.
  • I got new tires on the car.
  • I kinda like the alone time, at least for the moment. I am seeing friends and even went to the caucuses with a neighbor last night and had a decent time.
  • House clean out is inching along.
  • Queen of Swords Press is releasing a new novella by Michael Merriam on 3/7! Terror at Tierra de Cobre is a Weird West take on “The Magnificent 7” with an all woman cast and monsters and it’s up for preorder now - https://queenofswordspress.com/product/terror-at-tierra-de-cobre/!
  • Made progress on the new editions of Melissa Scott’s Astreiant Series! These books are so good!
  • Started poking at my next werewolf novel.
  • Saw “American Fiction” (very good) and “Argylle” (amusing, awesome ice skating/knife fighting scene).
  • Worked on taxes and giant To-Do List. ‘
  • Now off to dinner with Sig. Then more work when I get home.

catherineldf: (Default)
See my last post for the writing/personal review. How is my 2023 best summed up? A few months back, I stopped to give some money to a homeless man (I keep small bills and/or bags with socks and necessary stuff in the car for this)We chatted for a moment and he introduced himself, then squinted at me from the passenger side window and said, "If you don't mind me saying so, Ma'am, you look pretty tired. Are you working too hard?" And there we have it. He was not wrong; I feel like I've aged a decade this last year. But anyway, onto other things!

The Queen of Swords Press year started rough. I published a book that my designated team and I had worked quite hard on, the author decided that things were not meeting their expectations and informed me they no longer wished to work with me (which doesn't leave one many options, as it's me or the cats) and I gave them a date in midFeb for rights reversions and reverted their books to them. This brought on, I dunno, a quest for vengeance? Buyer's remorse? At any rate, they reported this to SFWA Griefcom and, despite the situation not meeting the basic requirements outlined on Griefcom's website, a sympathetic ear was found. Cue about 6 weeks of emailing back and forth in which I was threatened, bullied and then finally toadied up to, with absolutely none of the results the volunteer seemed to think he should be getting (he is no longer on GC). Eventually someone more sensible took it over and tried a different tack, got the document they asked for and a very cranky response from me. Now I see that they have announced that they will abide by the original guidelines they set forth for which grievances they will take on. So much eyeroll.

At any rate, in the meantime, I:
  • I submitted our books and got them accepted for distribution by Weightless Books
  • Did an author/publisher panel featuring J.M. Lee, Charles Payseur and Kat Weaver at the Eau Claire Library sponsored by the Chippewa Valley LGBT organization.
  • Saw this lovely post appear on Tor.com. Judith Tarr gave my werewolf series a magnificent shoutout, which sparked a run on the books And
  • Inspired Tantor Media to reach out to me for the audio rights. The audio books are out now for Silver Moon and Blood Moon. Blue Moon (Book 3) is in progress!
  • I subsequently got a creditable media rights inquiry about the books, but it was during the strike so nothing is likely to come of it. But very flattering regardless.
  • Heather Rose Jones's novella The Language of Roses, made the BSFA Longlist.
  • I was featured in this Publishers Weekly article about LGBTQ folks in publishing.
  • Did a metric crapton of cons, Prides, radio shows, Twitch channels and other events. Some favs: Rochester Pride, where we sold every book I brought; St. Cloud Pride, where we met interesting people and where a young person charged up to the table and wanted to know if I had written Silver Moon (a few times every year, someone tells me that it was their coming out novel and such was the case here), then they bought Blood Moon, got it signed and left happy; Raedial Reads Book Fair in St. Paul; and the Twin Cities Book Festival. I missed Columbia Heights Pride due to recovering from norovirus and the World Oddities Expo due to injury.
  • Signed contracts with Melissa Scott for new editions of her Astreiant Series (Point of Hopes, etc.) , plus a new novella in the series, all to be released in 2024 (squee!). Signed a contract with Michael Merriam for a new Weird West novella, due out in March to coincide with his 2024 Guest of Honor appearance at MarsCon Minneapolis.
  • Speaking of Guest of Honor appearances, I accepted a Guest of Honor invite at Capricon 44 in Chicago the first weekend in February and Melissa Scott will be a Guest of Honor at a still to be revealed Ohio con happening in March that has not announced guests yet.
  • We published 3 other books in 2023: Little Nothing by Dee Holloway (terrific sapphic novella about resistance and magic/award-eligible for everything with a novella category!), and Death by Silver and A Death at the Dionysus Club by Melissa Scott and Amy Griswold, an excellent gay gaslamp mystery duology. Matthew Bright of Inkspiral Design, Caitlin Cadieux and Terry Roy all did terrific work with covers and interior design.
  • Queen of Swords Press had its best sales year ever, clearing $14k for the first time. Our expenses also went up quite a bit, but we should be profitable this year. Some of the things were not repeatable, like my Tantor advances, But I am hoping that we are really growing our audience too. And 6 books by Melissa Scott on the docket for 2024 will definitely help!
  • Our authors did a ton of stuff not directly related to us!  Jennie Goloboy had a great year as a literary agent, wrote a couple of award-winning screenplays and taught a bunch of high profile workshops. Michael Merriam also had great success with his screenplays, seeing several screenplay contest wins. Alex Acks released a tie-in book for World of Warcraft (building on the success of their 2022 book tie-in). Dee Holloway began writing for Ancillary Reviews as well as writing music reviews for a local site in New York. Heather Rose Jones added more stories and history to the Lesbian Historic Motif Project and appeared at several cons. A.J. Fitzwater was once again a featured author at the WORD Christchurch Festival. Melissa had two books out this year with Candlemark & Gleam, Master of Samar and Fallen, got featured in the Encyclopedia of Arkansas and was a featured guest at several cons. Amy Griswold was also a featured guest at multiple cons. Heck of a year all around!
  • And last, but certainly not least, we wrapped the year getting collected by the University of Minnesota Libraries Upper Midwest Literary Archive! Look for more stuff about that soon.
HUGE thank you to everyone who bought our books, recommended out books, reviewed our books, hosted any/all of us or contributed to this success in any way! You are awesome and much appreciated! THANK YOU! Here's to 2024 being a better year all around for all of us!

The holiday week was a fun mix of stuff - going to the Jungle with friends to see a funny short play, going to the MIA for the Native American photography show (really good!) with another friend, going to the Minnesota Arboretum for Winter Lights at the Arb with someone else, hanging out at friend's houses eating food and chatting. And the less fun stuff. Another room opened up at the memory care place and I'm going for it. So far, I'm almost a full day into the paperwork and it's still not done. I have sent a check and the preliminary batch so hopefully that will be enough to start. In the meantime, she seems more checked out and things are definitely getting worse. So fingers crossed that I can make this happen before Feb and Capricon.

I did have a cool thing happen today - I met with the curator of the Upper Midwest Literary Archives at the University of Minnesota over hot beverages and she was enthusiastic about adding Queen of Swords Press titles and papers to the collection. I gave her copies of all of our print books to get things started and we had a great discussion about things we could do together to support the archives. Very excited about this!

Apart from that, we have end of year sales, as one does!

Still alive! Still digging out from under various projects!

Queen of Swords Press stuff:
A Death at the Dionysus Club (Lynes & Mathey 2) by Melissa Scott and Amy Griswold comes out on Thursday, but we have a deal running on Smashwords: buy it now for a discount and agree to sign up for our mailing list. It ends in 28 hours so move fast. When it comes out, it will be available everywhere, just like Book 1. And it's terrific!
Speaking of terrific, I just signed Michael Merriam's Weird West novella, Terror at Tierra de Cobre for a March release at MarsCon, where he is one of the Guests of Honor. It's an all-women spin on the Magnificent 7, with monsters. Good stuff!
And I signed Melissa Scott for a new edition of her Astreiant Series (Point of Hopes, etc.), plus a new novella in the series! The plan is to do an omnibus ebook of the original books (4 novels + 1 novella) in June, with a print book coming out each month, culminating in the new novella in print and ebook in December! Should be fun!
Also fun: Last table event of the year! Look for the Queen of Swords Press booth at the Minnesota Women's Art Festival this Saturday at the St. Mary's University Student Union in Minneapolis (across 26th from the American Swedish Institute). I'll be peddling Jana's work and my books (and bring others that people are interested in for purchase and pickup at the table). I'm going to be shutting down Jana's Etsy at the end of this month so if you're not local and there's something you want, now's the time. It's just too much work to maintain, alas, though I'll still have her work at our tables and at MCBA.
On the less jolly end of things, my beloved and terrific book designer, Terry Roy, has been experiencing some pretty bad health issues. Sending her all the best and hoping that she's doing a lot better soon.

Catherine writing stuff:
Blue Moon is inching along.
I've also been working on a project for my Patreon on the history of LGBTQ+ Publishing that I'll be continuing for December. Sign up for any amount or stay tuned for my next talk on the subject.

Catherine life stuff:
Where to begin? First, BIG thank you shout out to everyone who pitched in on my Ko-fi campaign for Capricon. I did make my goal so that's one obstacle hopefully out of the way. Rumor has it that day job is extending me at least through first quarter of 2024, so that will help a bunch. Still waiting on the CADI Waiver from the state, however. In the meantime, Jana has deteriorated further and there have been some exciting moments, so her PCAs and the social worker I work with got the county involved and turned the heat up under me to start looking at memory care. I toured a place the week before last and liked it and their nurse is coming to evaluate her on Thursday. However, Jana is the same woman who got kicked out of adult day care for being disruptive o all bets are off at the moment. If they're willing to take her, they'll take her CADI pending. There will still be significant upfront costs and I'll have to pay for furniture, etc. for her room. So that's one possibility of how things could roll in the next two months. After the eval, I'm going to talk to the company I talked to a few weeks back about 24/7 care at home and to the friends with healthcare experience who volunteered to stay here and herd her if we can't get her placed before February and Capricon. Fingers crossed that I can get some combination of these options sorted.
More bulletins soon!

Personal update coming soon. In the meantime, I got injured (bad knee banged up) and my assistant is quarantining so no World Oddities Expo for us tomorrow. Much sadness. So please consider checking out a Queen of Swords Press sale this weekend to help us make up a bit of the lost sales!

First up, Little Nothing by Dee Holloway is eligible for all  2023 awards that include novella length work! BSFA, World Fantasy, Nebulas, Hugos, anything we may have forgotten. It is already nominated for a Lambda Literary Award.

SALES!

Great deals this weekend on most of our titles at DriveThruFiction for the annual Black Friday- Cyber Monday sale.

We've also got a sale on Amazon for the IHeartSapphFic Megasale - titles include Silver Moon and Blood Moon by Catherine Lundoff, Last Car to Annwn Station by Michael Merriam, The Language of Roses by Heather Rose Jones and Little Nothing by Dee Holloway.

Or at least makes me feel like I'm making progress of a sort.
September so far:
  • Jana's dad, Charles, passed away right before Labor Day weekend. I only met him once (at her mom's funeral and memorial) and didn't have a ton of contact with him, but he did get pretty supportive in the last couple of years and I'll miss for her sake. He died at home in his own bed, surrounded by loved ones and with decent medical care and he went when he was ready to go so I think it was a good passing. J seems more disoriented than usual and does occasionally mention him in a way that indicates that she knows he's no longer around. Hopefully, that gets easier soon.
  • I got to fill out a bunch of paperwork for her examination by the country to determine whether or not she is sufficiently disabled to require assistance. The social worker seemed pretty clear on that, but there is, of course, several month's worth of backlog and one of the more immediately useful things would have been money for adult daycare...which she has already gotten herself kicked out of. She is being...extra right now so I'm hoping it's mostly her dad's passing and not a whole new phase of "extra" because I'm getting worn out.
  • We're getting a new roof and gutters due to massive hail damage and it will be happening soon, because everything must happen this month.
  • My new recliner arrives on Thursday. My hip and leg have not stopped screaming for weeks and have responded to absolutely nothing so here's hoping this is a big help.
  • Have managed to spend some quality time with friends, which has been lovely and pagan pride was fun until we got sort of rained out (just enough to drive people out of the park and require tarping up, not enough to help the drought much). I'm off to table at St. Cloud Pride this weekend so hopefully that goes smoothly.
  • Saw "Bottoms" and thought it was amusing.
  • Doing a little tiny bit of writing and working on getting the next Lynes & Mathey title by Melissa Scott and Amy Griswold out by December. Also, working on my talk on LGBTQ+ publishing for Quatrefoil. And dayjobbing like a dayjobbing thing.

Well, this month is the proverbial mixed bag. I just wrapped 3 events in a row, all pleasant and resulting in some sales. Then I torqued up my bad hip at West St. Paul Pride so I've been limping around for the past few days. So this week:
  • Bad hip and leg issues. much ouch
  • Smashwords book sale on Queen of Swords Press titles!
  • Just did the first big round of paperwork to get Jana's CADI application in. This is for the whole process of getting her evaluated and tapping into county funds since she's too young for federal. She's getting lost more often and is less interactive so if I can get CADI funds, I can get her into things like adult daycare and assisted living and so forth. Fingers crossed that it goes smoothly.
  • We have a new book coming out this Thursday! Dee Holloway's new historical fantasy novella, Little Nothing, is terrific and we can hardly wait for you to discover it!
  • I have a new list up at Shepherd.com - "Best Fantasy Tales About Women Over 40" I had some fun with this one and think it's pretty solid.
  • Blood Moon is out in Audiobook and Audiobook.com has a promo sale on it.
  • I am experimenting with different sizes of ollas, terracotta jars that you plant in your yard or pots and fill with water, which then gradually seeps into the soil. I'm not ready to deal with buried soaker hoses and we do have a drought so we'll see if these help.
  • The roof, the siding, the insurance, the endless phone calls. Maybe we're getting new siding on the garage and around the windows due to hail damage?
  • Mother Earth's Gardens field crew came by and did an epic cleanup on the yard. It looks much better, except for the bare spots which I now want to fill with things. Except drought and the wrong season for planting.
  • On Friday, I get to go into HCMC for not one, but two procedures! My mammogram last month was a tad iffy so it's Boob Smoosh 2 plus an ultrasound for me...right after I get a steroid shot in my hip. Am I worried? Maybe a little. A friend is coming with. Needless to say, no Diversicon for me this weekend. I might be spreading Mom's ashes down at Prairie Oaks Eco Garden on Sunday though, assuming her memorial brick is ready and I'm up to drive to a suburb.
Have I mentioned I'm tired and sore? Because yes. Anyway, off to bed with me. Please send good thoughts that I weather the rest of this week. And maybe go buy a book or ask for one of ours at your library. Every bit helps.

Today, the air quality is pretty crappy, I didn't get enough sleep and i have a headache from the hovering storm so I'm working on projects and watching the Netflix series Word of Honor. I'm a big wuxia fan from way back so this is a fun one. Very pretty, moderately interesting and laden with interesting subtext.

Apart from that, the month has been filled with caregiving-related stuff, miscellaneous events, day job, the Pride StoryBundle and sundry other things. Not so much rest or sleep, alas, though perhaps this weekend will bring some of those around other things. I'll need it - I just scheduled two procedures in a single day for two weeks from now - both needful, but it will be a lot and means that I probably won't be at Diversicon. I'm also also talking to the burial ground/nature preserve about a good date to scatter my mother's ashes and that is likely to happen that weekend as well. Which is a LOT.

Anyway, this week:
Two events! The release of Blood Moon in audiobook! The end of the Pride StoryBundle for this year!

Tiny Diner Art Market - June 29th, 5-8PM. Minneapolis. I'll be there with books by local authors and some of Jana Pullman's handmade boxes and book
Raedial Reads Book Fair - July 1, 11-5PM. Harriet Island Park, St. Paul, MN. Queen of Swords Press will have a table, staffed by me, with books and tea.
Blood Moon comes out in audiobook from Tantor Audio on 6/30! It's up for preorder now and is available everywhere you buy audio books, as is Silver Moon. And you can request them at your local library. Please do! This will be a big part of their discoverability.
The Pride StoryBundle ends this week (7/1) and this year is particularly outstanding in that we have 17 books (biggest bundle ever!) and of those 17, 4 wound up as finalists for the Locus Awards and one was a winner! Big shoutouts to Sam J. Miller for winning best collection for Boys, Beasts and Men and to R.B. Lemberg, Nisi Shawl and Naseem Jamnia for being finalists! Also: this has been a harder than usual bundle to sell, in part because of, well, everything. So if you're thinking about it or want to give someone a copy or you've already gotten it, please, please tell your friends and followers! We've got some amazing books this year and Rainbow Railroad could definitely use all the extra funds it can get.

And on that note, I am off to bed. May tomorrow be a mellower day!
