Last week was a delight, by which we mean the other thing. The microwave (which Jana could reliably still use) died, I came down with norovirus and while I was sick, Jana got lost for 6 hours and had to be retrieved by the police because the battery on her tracker died. Still recovering, in all senses of the term.
In the meanwhile, October will be full! And I have 3 classes coming up that could use more signups because life is expensive right now. Tell your friends!

As they say. Showed up on Tuesday, did my thing, got called into a meeting in the afternoon, got let go. It's a mixed bag in that it had gotten very toxic these last few months, but now I get to wrangle the additional financial and benefits stress. Sigh. Ah well, onward and upward. I'll start looking around in a few days, but suspect there won't be much out there until we get through the Inauguration. I *might* be eligible for unemployment, Jana *might* be eligible for a PPP loan, etc. So will be looking at those things and the Kickstarter I was originally plotting, plus whatever else I can scare up in the meantime.

While all that is going on, I've got stuff coming up! Boosts, book purchases, signing on to my Patreon, ordering Queen of Swords Press books in at your local library, signing up for my classes, hiring me for stuff, all on the table.
  • My class on writing characters in community, coming up this Saturday afternoon at the Rambo Academy, still has open slots and scholarships available.
  • My Patreon supports Queen of Swords Press. Thanks to some great humans, it's at $122 a month right now; if I could get it to $200 a month, that would cover a lot of our base costs, which would be super helpful.
  • There's a Queen of Swords Press Ko-fi account where you can tip us if Patreon seems like too much of a commitment and your TBR pile does not permit add-ons.
  • We do, of course, have books for sale and they are pretty damn good, if I do say so myself. You can get our books anywhere, but buying direct from us goes directly into the coffers.
  • My wife Jana saw her art teaching income completely dry up this year, but she has an Etsy and she does take on book repair clients as well as custom work like portfolios (reach out to her through Etsy).
I think I'll also be putting some stuff up for sale on Ebay and Cat Rambo and I are talking about on demand classes and I have a 30 item to-do list so it's going to be lively around here while I herd things.

The last few weeks have been a festival of work-related stress. Without going into too much detail, if you're going to get "all my way or the highway/you have no business asking questions" immediately with me because I asked what your plan was for my labor going forward, you've already lost me. I'm pissed and tired of certain kinds of ego-related crap so I'm working on an escape...at what I freely admit is not the wisest time for same. But I'd say one of the big lessons of the First Year of the 'Rona is that life is short and I really, really don't want to add pointless day job boredom and misery to it. So my brand shiny new project management certification class starts next week and runs through December; I'm going to try to tough the current gig out for a few more weeks to get some stuff in place, but if I don't make it, expect a mad flurry of fundraising-related posts. Those will likely happen anyway, but at a more moderate pace otherwise.

Queen of Swords Press will be having a sale that kicks off at midnight tonight and runs through the month. Book sales in September were kind of terrible despite advertising and several events, but that's understandable given what else has been going on (please stay safe out there, DW friends). In addition to that, I've got at least one event every couple of days all month so this is easier than setting and resetting special event pricing.

Jana has new stuff on her Etsy and is taking new book repair gigs so if you've got something, let me know and I'll hook you up.

Blood Moon
is cranking along and I'm really and for true almost done with this draft. I'm writing a fair amount of other new fiction too, plus a novel in progress and sundry other pieces on my Patreon (which supports Queen of Swords Press). I'll also be teaching my popular Gothic horror writing class at Cat Rambo's Academy at the end of the month, if you or someone you know is interested.

Otherwise, I'm reading submissions, visiting a bit with friends, watching fun-filled events online and enjoying "Enola Holmes" and "Black Sails." Apart from some relatively minor health stuff and the aforementioned stress, we are hanging in. We early voted and put up a yard sign and have been to several local benefits for various things. All things considered, a good life, if you don't weaken and all that. Hugs to those you being put through the wringer to greater and lesser extents right now.

My new mini collection, Unfinished Business: Tales of the Dark Fantastic, is up for preorder!

As part of the complete insanity that is my October, I'll be peddling this book at Fall Con (Twin Cities comics convention), the Twin Cities Book Festival and MultiverseCon, as well as doing readings at DreamHaven in Minneapolis (10/9) and Charis Books in Decatur, Georgia (8/17). Might also fit in a Halloween event, depending on how things go. I'll also be teaching an online class on writing Gothic Horror on 10/13, Crimson Peaks and Melancholy Mansions. Stay tuned for a podcast interview and a new class on escaping  out of the slush pile for Hidden Timber Books (more coming soon).

I have also been sick, unsurprisingly, but am now mostly better. Just in time for the MN State Fair, among other things. I'm going to make an effort to post a bit more regularly; wish me luck!
